Why Do Birds Sing at Dawn? The Science Behind the Dawn Chorus

Most of us have observed the dawn chorus on spring mornings. The prevailing explanation is that males sing to advertise for mates. However, this interpretation is insufficient. By the time many species reach peak singing intensity, pair bonds have already formed. If males already have mates, why do they invest so much energy in singing before sunrise?
This question introduces one of the most intriguing discoveries in modern behavioural ecology.
The old view
For much of the twentieth century, ornithologists assumed the dawn chorus served a straightforward purpose.
Male birds sang to attract females and warn rivals.
Once paired, singing was expected to decline.
For many species, that is broadly the case. But not all.
Some males continue to produce vigorous dawn performances long after territories are established and nests are underway, therefore maintaining the central puzzle. This observation raises a critical question. For whom are these males singing?
DNA changed everything
The answer only became possible once molecular genetics entered ornithology. For generations, most small passerines had been described as monogamous because observers saw one male and one female raising young together. Behaviour suggested fidelity.

However, DNA evidence revealed a different pattern.
Beginning in the 1980s and 1990s, genetic studies showed that social monogamy and genetic monogamy are not the same thing.
Many apparently faithful species regularly produce young fathered by neighbouring males. The pair bond remains intact.
Genetic data indicate a more complex reproductive system. Few species demonstrated this more dramatically than the Reed Bunting.
The reed bunting surprise
The Reed Bunting initially appeared to be an unlikely candidate for such reproductive complexity.
A familiar breeder of reedbeds, marshes and wet grassland, the male's black head and white collar make it one of spring's most recognisable wetland sights. Socially, pairs appear devoted, sharing territory, defence and feeding nestlings.
Then, in 1994, Andrew Dixon and colleagues analysed the species using DNA fingerprinting.
The results were unexpected, even among experienced behavioural ecologists. More than half of all chicks were fathered by males other than the female's social partner, while almost nine out of ten nests contained at least one extra-pair chick. Even more revealing, males reduced their parental investment when fewer chicks were genetically their own.
What appeared to be a conventional monogamous system actually concealed one of the highest rates of extra-pair paternity then documented in any songbird.
A second song at dawn
While DNA studies clarified the complexity of the breeding system, another question remained: what function does the dawn song serve within this system? How do females select these extra-pair males?
Researchers investigating Reed Buntings observed an unusual pattern: the song produced before sunrise is not merely an earlier version of the daytime song. Instead, it is structurally distinct. The dawn performance is longer, more persistent, and often delivered at significantly higher rates.
Detailed analysis by Swiss researchers revealed that older males produced stronger dawn performances, and males singing at higher rates secured significantly more extra-pair fertilisations.
Additionally, song diversity predicted reproductive success.
Importantly, the study did not conclude that paired males invent a new song after acquiring a mate. Instead, the evidence suggests that females may assess males through these prolonged dawn displays when seeking extra-pair partners.
The origin of this misconception is relatively straightforward.
One explanation is relatively straightforward. Scientific papers often report that paired males continue singing and achieve additional fertilisations outside the pair bond. Over time, this has been simplified into the popular claim that males change their song after pairing to attract another female. Current evidence does not support this interpretation. The central point is that paired males do not alter their song as a result of pairing.
They do not switch songs because they are paired. Males already possess a specialised dawn song, and females appear to use its quality when making reproductive decisions. This distinction is significant.
Why sing before sunrise?
The Reed Bunting similarly exemplifies the broader question key to this discussion.
Why has natural selection favoured intense singing before dawn in so many species?
Multiple factors likely add to this phenomenon. Before sunrise, the atmosphere is cooler and calmer, enabling sound to travel farther with less interference. Light levels are too low for efficient foraging, leaving birds with little opportunity cost. Morning hormone levels are high, encouraging territorial and reproductive behaviour. Finally, dawn provides an opportunity for individuals to advertise their physical condition.
Producing sustained song after a cold night requires energy and stamina. Only individuals in good condition can perform consistently day after day. Rather than merely announcing presence, the dawn chorus may serve as an honest signal of survival and physical condition following the night.
Recent research on female choice is changing the understanding of avian behaviour.
A major shift in recent decades has occurred in the understanding of female birds, rather than males. Earlier explanations often portrayed females as passive recipients of male displays. However, female birds may make complex reproductive decisions, balancing territory quality, parental care and genetic compatibility. Extra-pair mating appears to be less about promiscuity and more about increasing offspring quality while retaining the benefits of a dependable social partner. The dawn chorus may therefore represent one of the few opportunities for females to compare neighbouring males under similar conditions, thereby enhancing the role of female choice.
Listening differently
For many birdwatchers, the dawn chorus is one of the most memorable experiences of spring. Understanding that some songs may serve to advertise genetic quality, instead of only to establish territories, adds complexity to this phenomenon. Recognising that some songs may be directed toward advertising genetic quality, rather than territory establishment, increases the complexity of the central puzzle.
The chorus thus becomes less a celebration of spring and more an evolutionary process determined by competition, mate choice, and long-term selection. When a Reed Bunting delivers its dawn performance from the top of a reed stem, it may not be solely defending its territory. Instead, it may be participating in one of the most sophisticated mating systems identified by modern ornithology.
