Titchwell Marsh
Titchwell Marsh sits on the north Norfolk coast between Titchwell and Thornham. A short walk north takes you from woodland to reedbeds, a freshwater lagoon, saltmarsh, and then a wide sandy beach. This close mix of habitats means you can see inland wetland birds, coastal waders, and offshore birds all in one trip.
The Freshmarsh draws in waders and wildfowl; avocets nest here, and the reedbeds are home to Bearded Tits and hunting Marsh Harriers. In contrast, the beach and sea bring gulls, terns, divers, seaducks, and other seabirds. During spring and autumn passage, the Freshmarsh may hold notable visitors such as Spoonbill, Great White Egret, Ruff, Spotted Redshank and Spotted Flycatcher. Scarcer waders can include Temminck’s Stint and Pectoral Sandpiper, while exceptional years have produced White-rumped Sandpiper and Lesser Yellowlegs. Rare birds passing over or pausing briefly have included Red-rumped Swallow, Montagu’s Harrier, Red-backed Shrike and Rosy Starling. After strong northerly winds, the beach may also produce Grey Phalaropes and unusual seabird movement.
You can enjoy good birdwatching here year-round, but spring and autumn offer the greatest variety. Winter is especially good for wildfowl, waders, and raptors. Plan to spend most of a day, as the reserve is quite large. The main path is easy to follow; take your time and enjoy all the habitats the reserve has to offer
The Beach
Titchwell Marsh has a staffed visitor centre, toilets—including accessible facilities—in the car park, a café, shop, picnic areas, and several hides and viewpoints. South Parrinder, North Parrinder, Island, and Fen hides overlook the reserve’s principal wetlands, while a viewing screen provides access to Patsy’s Reedbed.
